Athletic Opportunities

TO PARENTS OF 3-8 GRADE STUDENTS BASKETBALL AND CHEERLEADING SUMMARY OF OPPORTUNITIES.

The Corpus Christi Athletic Association sponsors boys and girls basketball teams in both the Chambersburg Recreation Department Leagues and the Adams County C.Y.O. (Catholic Youth Organization) Leagues. Our C.Y.O. teams play their road games in the Hanover, PA area. The following write up is a grade by grade summary of these opportunities.

3RD GRADE
There is no formal Corpus Christi League offered, but the Chambersburg Recreation Department offers a league for boys and girls. Students from different schools are mixed on teams which play at the New Franklin Ruritan. Inquire at the Chambersburg Recreation Center (717-261-3275) for further information.

4TH GRADE
In the past Corpus Christi has fielded separate boys and girls teams in the Recreation Department League. Our teams are coached by volunteer parents of students on these teams. If you are interested in coaching your son’s or daughter’s team please let us know as we will need coaches in order to have these teams. These teams practice once a week at the school gym starting in December and their Rec Center games start in January.

5TH GRADE
Fifth grade is a big year for Corpus Christi basketball players with many opportunities.

5th GRADE BOYS
Traditionally over the past several years our fifth grade boys have played in both the Rec League and the C.Y.O. JVB League. The Rec League plays games starting in December in the evening during the school week at the Rec Center in downtown Chambersburg.
The JVB Team which has been the same team as the Rec League team has played eight C.Y.O. games (4 at home and 4 away). These games are on Saturday and Sunday afternoons starting in December. The season ends in February. The road games are played in the Hanover area (a forty minute trip).
We will need fifth grade parent coaches this year.

5TH AND 6TH GRADE GIRLS
The 5th grade girls also can play in two Leagues while the 6th grade girls only play in the C.Y.O. League. The fifth grade Rec League offers a team. Traditionally over the past few years it has been the Coaches’ decision if they want to enter this league since our 5th grade girls play in the CYO JV girls league along with our sixth grade girls. The JV C.Y.O. team plays a twelve game season (6 home and 6 away). They may also play some preseason games and one tournament.

Both the fifth grade boys and the fifth grade girls teams practice two times a week in the evening at Corpus Christi. If there is a Rec League game during a practice, the Rec League game takes precedence.

6th GRADE BOYS
The sixth grade boys play in the CYO League JV level. They typically play twelve league games (6 home and 6 away). They practice two times a week in the evening after school. The season starts in December and ends in February. The games are on Saturday and Sundays. This team may play in one or two tournaments during the year in addition to several preseason games.

VARSITY TEAMS – 7,8 GRADE BOYS AND GIRLS
Both the boys and girls teams play in the CYO Adams County League. They play 12 league games (six home and six away). There may be additional non league games scheduled. The games are on weekends starting in December and ending in February. These teams typically practice two times a week in the afternoons/evening after school. These teams may be entered in one or two tournaments over the season depending on the coaches. Due to numbers issues in the past we have allowed sixth grade girls to play “up” on the varsity team as needed. Once a C.Y.O. roster is set a student cannot move between levels of play.

CHEERLEADING
Corpus Christi offers Cheerleading for students in grades two through 5. The cheerleaders practice once a week and cheer at CYO home games.

Prayer

Father in heaven, bless our competition. May we participate with respect for one another in the spirit of fair play. Empowered by you Holy Spirit may we,(players, coaches and fans) embrace a Christian sense of hospitality towards one another. Under the title of Corpus Christi Body and Blood of Christ may we in this game and the game of life, always do our best with enthusiasm. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
